For my senior capstone, I was tasked to design an exhibit on the social issue I choose first semester. Since my social issue was "digital privacy", I had to make the space explain what it is and what can be done to help. My idea was quite conceptual as it is locks, some open and some closed. The locks have information of everyday tasks and show what makes you vulnerable to a cybersecurity issue.
The close-ups show what the exhibit looked like in person. Using acrylic, wood, fishing wire, and finishing nails, the exhibit was quite simple overall. The fishing wire was used to help connect the different "open" locks as it is meant to symbolize that all cracks in the digital space is to lead a breach. I used fishing wire because it isn't always visible. Depending on the angle it's seen, the wire becomes invisible. It helps show that even though we don't see it, all the small choices we make online, can lead to our information being stolen.
The exhibit was open to the public, and visitors were able to interact with my classmates’ and my exhibits. With information explaining some of the major breaches in history, it helps explain that big corporations, like Facebook and Yahoo, have been involved in our data being stolen. If people were interested in learning more about our social issues, people were able to read the books we each designed that not only had information about our topics, but also all the projects we worked on throughout the year.
